About David
Payne’s journey to become one of the best hurdlers in the world is far from ordinary. Payne didn’t start running track until his junior year of high school, and after only two years in the sport, his days on the track were over when he enrolled at the University of Cincinnati, or so he thought.  Payne missed the competition and decided to join the team as a walk-on during his sophomore year.  In his very first season back on the track he won the Conference USA 110m hurdles title, and he went on to win numerous conference and All-American honors. The most memorable twist in Payne’s journey to the podium came at the 2007 IAAF World Championships. Payne did not qualify for the World Championship team after finishing fourth at the 2007 USA Championships; however, on Monday morning, August 27 at 5:30 a.m. he received a phone call telling him that American record holder Dominique Arnold had dropped off the team due to injury, and would he be willing to get on a plane to Japan the next day to compete. Payne arrived in Osaka on that Tuesday evening and competed in the first round the very next day. He made it through the opening round and the semifinals before finishing third for the bronze medal in the final in a personal-best time of 13.02 seconds. It was a breakthrough performance for Payne, who is apparently immune to the affects of jet lag.
