Day 3 Evening Session Quotes - IAAF World Youth Championships
Sammie Watson, 800m semifinal winner
On the race and her strategy
“I was just going to sit on the leaders and try to kick at the end and try to get a spot in the finals.”
On the a pedestrian pace but the kick starting with 200 meters to go
“Another girl started taking it, so I wanted to follow her and try to win the heat. I felt the first lap was pretty slow, but I wasn’t going to push the pace and tire myself out and let everybody follow me at the end. I was just thinking about finishing the race strong and not being outkicked.”
On preparation going into the the final
“I think I’m going to focus on getting out more and getting in a good position by the 150 mark in.”
Caice Lanovaz, Heptathlon
On her performances throughout four events in Friday
“I was really proud of my hurdle race. I tied my PR, and it was the fastest I’ve ever done this race in heptathlon by a lot compared to the last week. In high jump, I did alright. I did the same as last week but it wasn’t a PR. It was close. I was trying to work on speed and arching. Shot put was good. I got my PR in shot put, and I was working on quickness and speed through the throw. In the 200, I just tried to focus on keeping my hips up and try to PR.”
On competing at an international event
The competition is amazing here. I came in and just really wanted to PR. I tried to make a mark for myself on the international stage because I’ve never done that before. It’s amazing here.
On what she’s looking forward to on Day 2 of heptathlon
Tomorrow, I’m definitely looking forward to long jump and definitely hoping to get most points back there and especially in the 800m.
On what it means to represent Team USA
It means the world to represent Team USA. I wouldn’t want to have anyone else’s uniform on.
Lynna Irby, 400m silver medalist
On preparation for the finals
“I just talked to my coach last night, and he told me that everything was great yesterday - just do what you did yesterday. First place, she was moving, so I thought ‘I’ve got to move with her.’ We were rolling, and it was fun. All the competition was great.”
On what it means or how it feels to be a medalist
“I feel really excited. I didn’t think that I could do it. I just feel really blessed and honored, and I’m trying not to cry. I feel really good.
On preparation heading into today’s final
It was really just about resting and relaxing and letting everything work its course.
What message do you send to USA?
“Thanks for all your support. I feel really honored to represent you guys. Thank you!”
What were your thoughts during the race at each stage
“I was just thinking, ‘Let’s get this over with. Let’s just pass the finish line, and hopefully get a PR.”
On why the United States is always the best team
“It’s because we work really hard, and giving up is never an option.”
Keshun Reed, 400m bronze medalist

On the stages of the race
“First 100, I knew I had to get out because I was on the outside lane. I had to get out, run my race and then come finish.”
On training with Josephus and motivation they’ve given each other
“It’s great. Ever since we got here, we’ve been talking about it - getting on the podium. And we both made it on the podium, so it’s a great accomplishment for both of us.”
On his mental and physical preparation in the last 24-hours
“I was just telling myself to do get my body right and do a good recovery and then just come out here and do my best.”
Josephus Lyles, 400m silver medalist
On his race strategy
“I definitely tried to get out comfortably. I got out really well. Going down the backstretch, i was just trying to get a little bit of ground, make a good move and put myself into good position because I wanted to turn. I started taking it back up. Came off the straightaway and that was the first fight a little bit. Then I just tried to power down the homestretch since it is the last (400m) race of the season, so I had to give it everything I’ve got. Coming down the stretch, I tried everything. I even tried high-kneeing it, but he got a little extra.”
On whether or not he was aiming for a PR
PRs are definitely what it’s all about. In the 200, I expect to do something very similar -- if not better.
On what it means to rerpresent
It means a lot. It’s a great country. Just being able to contribute to that medal count and being able to contribute for my team and being up there on the podium for my team means a lot. I’m just proud to be an American.”
Isaiah Lucas, 110 hurdles bronze medalist
On his racing in the finals
“My race was exciting and fast. It was really fast. I hit one of the last hurdles, but I guess I came up on it too fast. It was very fun. The last 20 or 30 meters of the race were actually my worst part. The best part of my race is around the 50 because I get to make my trail leg go faster to decelerate after that.”
“The feeling that I didn’t know was the worst part. Once I found out what place I got, I was excited.”
