Jasmin Stowers earns USATF Athlete of the Week honors

4/29/2015

INDIANAPOLIS -- Jasmin Stowers wins USATF Athlete of the Week after her outstanding performance at Drake Relays on Saturday, April 25.

Stowers (Pendleton, South Carolina) won the 100-meter hurdles with a world-leading time of 12.40 at the Drake Relays, moving her up to No. 5 on the all-time U.S. performers list after posting the 8th fastest time run by an American. Her time is .31 faster than her previous personal best.

“When I crossed the finish line,” Stowers said, “my focus was not on the time. I was just happy I won and ran a clean race. When I crossed the finish line and realized I ran 12.40, I was stunned.”

Earlier this year at the 2015 USATF Indoor Championships, the multi-time All-American at LSU took the top spot in the womens 60mH with a time of 7.84 before making her outdoor debut with a breakout performance at Drake. Stowers defeated a field in Des Moines that included Olympic champion and reigning Diamond League winner Dawn Harper-Nelson, American record holder Brianna Rollins, and standouts Kristi Castlin and Queen Harrison.

“The USA 100 [meter] hurdle competition is always competitive,” she said. “I am just thankful I was able to compete with some of best hurdlers in the world.”

Other notable performances include:

  • Francena McCorory (Hampton, Virginia) won the 400m with a world-leading time of 50.13 at Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
  • Annie Bersagel (Greeley, Colorado) won the Dusseldorf Marathon with a personal best of 2:28:29 on Sunday, April 26.
  • Demi Payne (New Braunfels, Texas), a junior at Stephen F. Austin, surpassed the collegiate outdoor record with her vault of 15-3.5/4.66m at Drake Relays.

Now in its 14th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
