INDIANAPOLIS --
Joe Kovacs wins USATF Athlete of the Week after an impressive performance at the Nike Prefontaine Classic on Friday, May 29 in Eugene, Oregon.
Kovacs (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) beat a strong men's shot field with his 22.12m/72-7 toss on his last attempt, turning in his second-best throw of the season. He is still one of only 22 throwers to ever eclipse the 22-meter mark in shot put and leads the world this season with his mark of 22.35m/73-4 from April.
Kovacs scored four points in the IAAF Diamond League standings after the weekend. He currently trails German thrower David Storl by two points, who finished second to Kovacs in Eugene.
“The first goal is to beat the U.S. guys ‘cause that’s going to be the tough one,” said Kovacs. “The next goal to look forward to is Worlds. It’s always good to beat whomever is on top right now.”
The 2015 IAAF World Championships begin Aug. 22 in Beijing, China, and Kovacs is expected to throw for the United States.
