7/18/2015

TORONTO -- Lindsay Flanagan ran a strong race in the marathon Saturday at the Pan American Games, where she finished in third place in 2:36:30 with the first bronze medal ever for an American woman.

Flanagan (Silver Springs, Maryland) was in the lead pack at 10 km, passing in 37:22, and then over the next 5 km she moved up gradually and never fell out of the top three. She passed the halfway point at 1:17:44 in second place behind eventual champion Gladys Tejeda of Peru, and was at 30 km at 1:50:39. Over the next 5 km Flanagan was passed by Brazil’s Adriana da Silva, and a pair of sub-19:00 5 km segments helped ensure the bronze.

Tejeda won gold in 2:33:03 with da Silva taking silver in 2:35:40. Flanagan’s bronze is the first medal for a Team USA athlete in the event since Maria Trujillo won gold in 1995.
