Record breaker Spratling named USATF Athlete of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS -- Brycen Spratling picks up USATF Athlete of the Week accolades after his record-setting race on Saturday, Feb. 14 at the NYRR Millrose Games at the Armory.

Spratling (Webster, New York) set a new NYRR Millrose Games meet record, an American indoor record and an all-time world best in the men’s 500 meters. The former University of Pittsburgh standout finished in 1:00.06 to bring down the 28-year-old U.S. record of 1:00.17, set by Ken Lowery in 1987.

Spratling, a 10-time collegiate All-American who holds the NCAA 500 meter record as well, will now look to qualify for the World Championships this summer and the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Other notable performances this week included:
  • Matt Centrowitz (Eugene, Oregon) who won the men’s NYRR Wanamaker Mile with his time of 3:51.35.
  • Bernard Lagat (Tucson, Arizona) claimed his second World Masters record in as many weeks, clocking a 3:54.91 Wanamaker Mile to shatter the previous World Masters record by more than three seconds.
  • Shannon Rowbury (Portland, Oregon) who won the women’s NYRR Wanamaker Mile on Saturday at the Armory with her time of 4:24.31.
  • John Trautmann (New York, New York) who broke the listed M45 world indoor record, finishing in 4:12.33 for fifth place in Section 6 of the mile at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University on Saturday, Feb. 14.
  • Ajee Wilson (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) defended her 800m Millrose title in fine form, finishing in 2:01.57 for the fastest time by an American woman this year.

Now in its 14th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
