TORONTO -- Team USA completed the country’s best Pan American Games performance in the sport of track & field since 1999, collecting 41 medals: 13 golds, 15 silvers and and 13 bronzes over seven days of competition at both CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Athletics Stadium and along the Ontario Place West Channel.
The U.S. women showed their prowess for international games, winning 23 medals while Team USA’s men won 18. The U.S. crushed the scoring table with 403 points, outscoring home team Canada by 153 points. Brazil was third with 164 points.
Gold Medal Performances
Earning the most gold medals since 2003, U.S. athletes set five Pan American Games records, including
David Oliver’s 110m hurdle final,
Queen Harrison’s 100m hurdle final,
Ashley Higginson’s 3000 steeplechase,
Barbara Pierre’s 100m heat and the women’s 4x100 relay comprised of
Barbara Pierre, Lekeisha Lawson, Morolake Akinosun and
Kaylin Whitney, the youngest competitor to win a gold medal.
With the 41 medals, Team USA also recorded the ninth best medal tally in team history and the best medal performance of the new millennium.
All four relay teams won medals, three of them gold. Two athletes set lifetime bests and nine athletes recorded season bests.
Team USA’s youngest athlete, seventeen-year-old sprinter Kaylin Whitney took home her first individual international medal on a senior team when she won the women’s 200m. Whitney also scored gold in the women’s 4x100m relay anchoring the team to a meet record.
