TORONTO -- In the men’s marathon held Saturday morning at the Pan American Games, Team USA’s
Craig Leon and
Tim Young finished fifth and sixth in 2:19:26 and 2:19:34, respectively, on the four-loop course through Hyde Park and along the Ontario Place West Channel.
In the early going,
Leon (Van Wert, Ohio) tucked into the chase pack with
Young (Fredericksburg, Virginia) just behind the lead pack through 5 km. At the 10 km mark, Leon made his move and surged from 12th to sixth, splitting 33:21 for 10 km and quickening his pace 30 seconds faster than his initial 5 km. Young was just a second behind his compatriot in 33:22.
The pace picked up again as the field reached the 15 km mark, pushing the two U.S. athletes just outside the top 10. Running together, Leon and Young’s pace stayed steady and they hit 49:25 through 15 km.
By 20 km, the chase pack caught back up to the leaders and stayed with them towards the midway point, as both Leon and Young held steady at 1:05:41 for 20 km.
At the halfway mark, both athletes were back among the top 10. Leon and Young continued to jockey for position with the lead pack, going through 25 km in 1:21:54.
Young found renewed strength at 30 km, jumping from ninth to fifth place and surging ahead of teammate Leon for the first time Saturday with only one second separating the two U.S. runners.
Leon jumped back ahead of his teammate in the final miles of the race and the duo settled into their final positions with just over 5 km remaining. Leon crossed fifth in 2:19:26 and Young finished just behind him in 2:19:34 for sixth.
