7/17/2015

CALI, Colombia -- The morning session on Day 3 featured the start of the heptathlon, two berths in the discus final and first place qualifying finishes for three of four Americans in the 200 meters.

Team USA’s multi-event athletes started the day strong as Caice Lanovaz (Los Gatos, California) ran 14.43 for first place in heat 2 of Friday morning heptathlon action, taking more than a half second off her previous personal best. Jordan Fields (Saint Johns, Florida) won the third heat, posting a lifetime best of 14.07. In the high jump, Fields cleared 1.61m/5-3.25, then missed all three attempts at 1.64m/5-4.5. Lanovaz cleared her first three heights on first attempts and ultimately had a best of 1.61 as well.

In men’s 200m, Josephus Lyles (Alexandria, Virginia) was a convincing winner in heat four. No one could touch him after the curve as finished top in his heat with a time of 21.09, more than a half-second ahead of the second-place finisher. Fellow American Maxwell Willis ran 20.99 in the eighth and final heat for second place, a personal best and a spot in the semifinal. It was the second fastest time of the day overall.

In the women’s 200m, Lauren Rain Williams (Lakewood, California) blasted out of the start in the fourth heat, settling in comfortably ahead of the field to finish in 23.41, the fastest qualifying time of the day. Running in the first heat and fresh off Thursday night’s gold medal and World Youth Championships record, teammate Candace Hill (Stockbridge, Georgia) ran a well-planned race in 23.93 as the first across the line and also securing her place in the semis.

In triple jump, Tara Davis (Agoura Hills, California) rebounded well in Group B, leaping a lifetime best 13.01m/42-8.25 on her third attempt to surpass the qualification standard and earn a place in the final. LaJarvia Brown (Hazelwood, Missouri) jumped a personal best of 12.74m/41-9.75 to finish 14th, just two spots out of the final.

Adrian “Tripp” Piperi (Spring, Texas) came one step closer to the possibility of pulling off a throws double when he tossed 58.62m/192-4 for third place in Group A of the discus to qualify for the final. Piperi tossed 22.00m/72-2.25 in the shot put on Tuesday to win the first gold medal of the Championships.
