Young talent to shine at Pan Am Juniors in Edmonton

7/30/2015

TORONTO -- Team USA will feature 87 young athletes, competing at the Pan American Junior Championships in Edmonton, Canada, from July 31-Aug. 2.

Highlighting the roster are seven World Junior medalists, four World Youth medalists and three athletes who are participating in their second international event of the year, coming off of World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia.

Siblings Randall and Vashti Cunningham (Las Vegas, Nevada) take on the high jump after both finished top in the event at USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in Eugene in June. The elder, Randall, cleared 2.20m/7-2.5, while sister Vashti made her highest clearance at 1.84m/6-0.5.

World Junior medalists include Teahna Daniels, who ran the 100 meters in 11.24 at the qualifying event and pole vault silver medalist Desiree Freier, who competed for Team USA last summer in Eugene, Oregon. Freier cleared an American Junior record 4.45m/14-7.25 for second place at the World Junior Championships and was second at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships this year. Olivia Baker (South Orange, New Jersey), last year’s world junior bronze medalist in the 400m, is in the pool for the 4x400m relay.

Raven Saunders (Charleston, South Carolina), a World Juniors silver medalist in shot put, had a stellar freshman year at Southern Illinois University, where she became an NCAA indoor and outdoor champion. She won the USATF Juniors and was eighth in the senior meet.

Dior Hall (Denver, Colorado) of USC set a World Junior record of 12.74 in the 100m hurdles to finish third at the NCAA Championships in June, and was a silver medalist at the World Juniors in 2014.

World Juniors decathlon sixth-placer Harrison Williams (Memphis, Tennessee) will also compete at the event after a fourth-place NCAA finish as a freshman at Stanford. Captain of the World Juniors team in Eugene, Kenny Selmon (Mableton, Georgia) became an ACC runner-up and NCAA semifinalist this year as a freshman at North Carolina.

Following a short stop in the U.S. after competing at World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia, medalists Sophia Rivera (Brentwood, Missouri) and Norman Grimes (Canyon, Texas) along with teammate Bobby Colantonio (Barrington, Rhode Island) head to Edmonton. Rivera won silver in shot put and Grimes won gold in the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay.

At the USATF Juniors, John Maurins (Mentor, Ohio) of Wake Forest shattered the American Junior record in the shot put with a throw of 21.90m/71-10.25. Oregon’s Raevyn Rogers (Houston, Texas) won the NCAA 800m title with a 1:59.71 and was the 2013 World Youth bronze medalist.

In the 10 km race walk, Anali Cisneros (Elgin, Illinois) and Katie Michta (Nesconset, New York) will don the red, white and blue.
