First tried sports because of the influence of an older cousin, Jacqueline 'Cookie' Williams...tried softball first, then basketball, which she played at Southern Illinois... threw the shot first as a senior on the urging of graduate assistant John Smith, who would become her husband in 1990...Smith is a former 64-3 putter himself...she is now a certified massage therapist, and also offers personal training...she began concentrating only on the shot in 1996 because of knee problems exacerbated by the discus... her silver medal in the World Indoor shot in 1995 is the highest medal ever won by an American woman in the event and the first OG/WC medal won since 1960.
